PRESS STATEMENT

The Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression calls on all allies in the movement for justice to gather for a People’s Hearing on Police Crimes and the Injustice System!

This is the fourth hearing of this kind that CAARPR has organized. These hearings give community members an opportunity to hear from the survivors and families that are at the heart of our movement, and the driving force behind the struggle for community control of the police and the Campaign to Free Incarcerated Survivors of Police Torture (CFIST). This year’s hearing will also be an opportunity for newly elected Police District Council members to hear from individuals directly impacted by state violence.

It is well known that Chicago is the wrongful conviction capital of the United States, yet few police officers have ever faced consequences for their crimes of perjury, torture, and murder. In the absence of accountability, CPD continues to kill our loved ones with impunity and trap our family members in cages where they are denied food, water, and health care. With the historic election of Brandon Johnson and pro-accountability District Councilors across the city of Chicago, the people of Chicago have made it clear that they are ready for a new vision of safety for our city; a vision which must include accountability for police who continue to terrorize Black and brown community on the South and West sides.

The program on June 3 will include testimony from survivors and an opportunity  for community members to organize with others in their police district to take action. Food will be provided.
